West Marion Golden Anniversary Celebration

West Marion's annual staff is celebrating the Golden Anniversary of its publication, "The Shield," with a special project for the entire West Marion School community covering 1959 -2009. In addition to producing their 2009-2010 yearbook, West Marion's annual staff came up with an idea to produce a collection of all of the West Marion annuals ever published into a single anthology publication. The team ran with the project once the "go-ahead" signal was given by annual staff sponsor W.J. Sager.

After building the initial "frame," the project team decided to give their West Marion community a sneak preview of their undertaking. Selected years; 1960, 1972, 1978, and 1979 can be viewed at http://www.marionk12.org/sager/goldenedition/index.htm  Click on the underlined years to view the past. Turn your speakers on because the staff also decided to include a play-list of the top music hits from each school year as a bonus. Just click on the flash music player's "play button" to listen.

This Special Anthology project will be produced as a DVD, and will be available for sale by mid-May 2010.  Over the 50 year history of "The Shield," 44 annuals were produced; 42 hardback text, and two CD-Rom editions. That's nearly 5000 pages of pictorial history and memories. All will be included on the DVD collection as well as a bonus play-list of over 250 songs from 1960-2009.  The cost of the anthology will be $35.00, (compare that to the $2,100.00 price tag if you purchased each yearbook individually).

Dear Parents,

One of the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is that school districts share certain information regarding school performance with parents, including the following:
  • Parents must be informed if their child’s school is identified for school improvement. This happens if a school fails to make adequate yearly progress in the same area for two consecutive years.
    • This year East Marion High School was identified as being “in school improvement”.
    • Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) was not met by all schools in all areas.
  • Parents must be informed if the school has teachers who are not highly qualified in the subject they teach.
  • State, district and school level test data must be shared with parents each year.
  • Test data reports must show how different subgroups are performing.

Below are school, district, and state charts showing how students performed on the last assessment in the areas of reading, mathematics, and language (Grades 2-8) and 5th and 8th grade science. For the high schools, we included average scale scores and percentage that passed the Subject Area Tests. If you have any questions about this report card, call your child’s principal.

The report card data in its entirety is available for public viewing on the Mississippi Department of Education website or at the Marion County School District office, located at 1010 Highway 13 North, Suite 2, Columbia, MS.

The Mississippi State Department of Health is working closely with your school to provide guidance and information to prevent the spread of flu among school children.

Parents are encouraged to keep their children home when they are sick with flu-like illness, and children should stay home until they don’t have fever for 24 hours. Children who become ill while at school will be separated from others until parents can be notified and pick them up.  You should encourage your children to wash their hands frequently, and cover their coughs and sneezes, since this is how flu is transmitted.  The CDC does not currently recommend school closures as an effective way to prevent flu in the schools.

All parents are encouraged to have their children vaccinated against regular seasonal flu.

The following link:  Mississippi Dept of Healthy Schools, will offer more information.

The document below entitled -Key Points to Prevent the Spread of Flu in Schools can be downloaded. The document is in PDF  format, parents and teachers may download the document to assist them in preventing the spread of disease in their homes and classrooms.
